Use of the phrase “design trend” provokes spirited conversations in our office. While it is a helpful and casual catchphrase, the team at Traditional Home tries to eschew it. Rather than chase fleeting notions, we aim for timelessness and fresh approaches to the classics as core investments in a home’s design. At the same time, design is constantly moving. Palettes shift in temperature, furniture profiles change shape, and new generations deem an element chic rather than dated.

Putting together this winter issue is one of my favorite things to do as an editor. It’s a favorite pursuit of mine because this is such a favorite issue of yours. And I understand why. I’ve always loved the spirit of the holidays and my own family celebrations and traditions. Since I was a teenager, though, I also lived the holidays vicariously through the pages of the holiday issues of my favorite home magazines.

The work of a designer or architect is multifaceted. They help people fulfill dreams, maximize views and natural light, restore historical details, and imagine new structures. They guide more sustainable choices, make focal points of antiques, intuit color schemes that express us, and create spaces that hold our core memories.
