CAN YOU FEEL IT? Spring is in the air. Maybe the pots are still stacked in the garage, and the deck chairs are still swaddled and sleeping, but it’s here. The days have grown longer, the sun is shining brighter, and we can finally enjoy the outdoors again, one patio at a time. During the colder months, while my outdoor spaces hibernate, I daydream about enhancing them. Nothing huge, but each year, we add a new element or two—a hammock, fresh pillows or additional plants that bring more texture.

Rustling up holiday spirit a few weeks (or even months) early is one of the quirks of magazine making, but by the time we ship the issue, I’m always so ready for the season to kick in.

“Do you know what way we’re headed?”“Of course,” I’d say. “We’re going west.” My grandfather taught me to use the sun to tell directions when I was just a kid. He knew I knew, but he’d ask anyway. And then he’d smile. Late summer and early fall were my favorite times to visit our family’s Iowa farm. The switchgrass grew as tall as our shoulders, and my legs were always peppered with little cuts because I refused to wear jeans on our rides. “It’s hot,” I’d say.

ON THE ROAD MAP of the year, Memorial Day marks the corner of May and June. Slow down for a barbecue, turn left, and suddenly summer stretches ahead like an open highway, unfettered and full of possibility. Pool days. Patio hangs. September? Might as well be another continent. Because for the next three glorious months, nothing stands in our way. Except, well, life. We still have to work. Shop for groceries. Scuttle between day camps. Clean the gutters. Even my daughters find that the weeks fly.
