This morning I woke up to my second Daily Mail headline this month… grabbing a juicy little line, out of context, from these long Substack letters that I take hours to write to you all… and soiling it, by turning it into salacious, greasy, tabloid gossip. I am a life long insomniac, so this is a big old deal. If you’re already a good sleeper, then you won’t need this article, and also you can GO AND FUCK YOURSELF you lucky, privileged, smug bastard. You are the person I am the most jealous of in the world, you are holding more wealth than you can imagine. I would, without flinching, trade in all the success, money and adventures I’ve had to just be a good sleeper. Insomnia is the absolute ghetto of the mind, body and soul. It’s a life half lived.

*PREPARE FOR LONG SCATHING RANT*A huge women’s magazine posed this question last week, as they published 10 women’s feelings about their facelifts in their early forties. My take is: NO OBVIOUSLY FUCKING NOT. Listen, I am always pro autonomy, and don't disapprove of people’s choices as to how they choose to resolve their physical grievances… but I draw the line at this level of gaslighting.

I had no idea how many of you felt exactly the same way. I kept tearily refreshing my page again and again, and each swipe would reveal another little light in the dark loneliness of chronic illness. You made my week in ways I could never have expected.

Dear reader. I’m sorry. I’m going to be very blunt from start to finish, because I’m fresh out of word salad. My output briefly slowed down in the past month, due to my being dangerously close to what felt like death’s door. I had quite the little accident and it led me to unprecedented internal chaos. I apologize for my pace.

It’s my birthday today, (39!) and this is all I can think about. So very much chat about “living in the moment” and “talking to your younger self…” but VERY little about looking forward, beyond a five year plan, decades into the future. Why? It’s so important. I only realize this now that I’m old enough to have some significant time to look back on (and judge) my younger years, and honestly, given the opportunity, I would kick 25 year old me, right in the tits.

Listen, let's put our politics aside for a second, and regardless of which party you support, admit that some of the biggest names on the Right… have been exhibiting some very odd behavior in the past month. I’ve watched even their most die hard supporters stutter and stumble in efforts to defend them. I've never been alive for this scale of a lack of decorum, common sense or basic human compassion all at once, on a daily, if not hourly basis.

I’ve been mostly writing comedy pieces on here, but it’s just the fucking worst time of the year for anyone experiencing loss, so I thought I would let my guard down and tell you the truth… which is that I’m… spiraling. This is the seventh time I’ve sat down to write this. Fuck it. In January, a sobbing phone call revealed to me that out of nowhere, my smart, funny, and freakishly kind close friend had died. Suddenly and horrifically. She was barely 39. I still can’t believe it.
