Adoremus Bulletin

Adoremus Bulletin

Adoremus Bulletin was established in 1995 by a trio of individuals: two priests and a laywoman. The founders include Jesuit Father Joseph Fessio, who also started Ignatius Press; Father Jerry Pokorsky, who is a co-founder of Credo, a group of priests dedicated to ensuring an accurate translation of the liturgy; and Helen Hull Hitchcock, a writer, editor, and dedicated Catholic advocate, known for founding Women of Faith and Family.

It may have felt like a long Lent this past year. Maybe it feels like a long Lent every year. Fortunately, for Catholics it is always a longer Easter season. The reason for this 50-day season is to commemorate the big events after the Resurrection of Jesus, including the Ascension 40 days from Easter and the descent of the Holy Spirit 50 days after Easter.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “the Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life” (CCC, 1324). Yet, when it comes to the words and actions that make up the liturgy of the Mass, most Catholics know what to do—what to say, when to sit, stand, or kneel—but not necessarily why. 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of the English translation of Joseph Ratzinger’s landmark book, The Spirit of the Liturgy. To celebrate this significant work and its impact on the life of the Church, the Society for Catholic Liturgy will dedicate its 2025 annual conference to this topic and the liturgical legacy of Joseph Ratzinger-Benedict XVI. In preparation for the conference, we are hosting a year long series of talks based on the 12 chapters of the book.

Editor’s note: The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy not only called for the reform and renewal of the Church’s liturgical books, but also allowed for their translation into vernacular languages. While most of the Latin typical editions have been revised by now, bringing them into a “form that both testifies to the stability achieved and is worthy of the mysteries being celebrated” (Vicesimus quintus annus, 20) is an ongoing task being taken up by bishops’ conferences.
