    I wrote this post originally in 2016 and recent came across it while trip planning. It made me smile thinking about how much my work has changed in the years that have passed, but also how even the smallest things in travel are constantly changing.     The world has become a complicated place. I think fondly of the backpacking days in the 90’s of just going and living in the moment. The pandemic gave all of us a lot to think about when considering traveling: environmental impacts, international conflict, wealth inequity, and the unavoidable question of spreading disease. With the multitude of crises that are happening around the globe, we are being forced to ask ourselves not only “is it safe to travel?” but also should I travel?

    If you are planning to travel to the UK any time soon, you’ll need to file for a new permission, called an Electronic Travel Authorization, or ETA. Americans have had the longtime luxury of going almost anywhere without a visa, particularly in Europe. The problem has been, though, that the US hasn’t reciprocated for EU/UK nationals, requiring them to apply for ETIAS, a digital visa, before visiting.
