MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Having just gone into effect on Sunday, Alabama’s new law regulating vapes and electronic nicotine devices is being challenged in federal court by the convenience store and gas station industry. The new law, the result of House Bill 8 from Rep. Barbara Drummond, D-Mobile, prohibits the sale of vape products outside of vape stores and specialty shops, save for a select few products authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Members of the Joint Prison Oversight Committee raised concerns Wednesday over a set of proposed scoring guidelines from the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles. Some lawmakers cited “corrupted” scoring data on which the guidelines were supposedly developed, as well as what they considered to be omissions in scoring criteria and a lack of oversight. The parole board is required by law to update the guidelines every three years, but they are now roughly three years overdue.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles has submitted new scoring guidelines for public review amid growing legislative scrutiny over its noncompliance with state law and continued failures to adhere to its current guidelines. The new guidelines, which are open for public comment through July 4, increase the score required to recommend parole denial, increasing an inmate’s latitude for infractions. But they also broaden the criteria under which inmates can be penalized.
