I'm no Substack evangelist, but sometimes you've just got to go where the readers are. Have you noticed a few changes around here? Practical updates first, followed by delving a bit deeper into the weeds. This publication's overall name is now Alpenglow Journal. I wrote a very popular piece last year introducing the idea, and while I've since decided to move more slowly and conserve energy, the basic concept still stands. A few analogue adventure treasures from this week, plus a tweaked Unplugged formatHello and welcome to the first issue of Unplugged published under this publication's new overall name on Substack, Alpenglow Journal. Please feel free to subscribe using whichever platform you prefer. Any camera can take pictures (even a smartphone, I guess, if you want to be basic) and none of this actually matters.

For more info, read this FAQ. Please feel free to subscribe using whichever platform you prefer. One of my long-term hopes with this journal is to connect threads between adventure and the spheres of art, literature, tech, philosophy.

Five years ago, with the first Covid lockdown imminent and a perfect forecast, I decided to seize the opportunity to complete a long-dreamed-of Cairngorms traverse in perfect winter conditions... πAuthor's note: A version of this story was first published by The Great Outdoors magazine in 2021. At the time this trip took place, in early March 2020, it felt as if I stood on the edge: of a terrifying pandemic-riddled world, perhaps even the end of my freedom to stravaig in the Scottish mountains.
