A Q&A with Arpita Shah: “A love letter to all the women in my family”

Arpita Shah’s photographic and film practice explores ideas around home, belonging and shifting cultural identities. Her work is informed by her own experiences of being born in Gujarat, India, then later growing up across Saudi Arabia, Ireland and the Middle East, before her family settled in Eastbourne.

Emma Critchley: Soundingsa-n member Emma Critchley’s solo exhibition takes us underwater, to explore the urgent and complex issue of deep sea mining. Combining filmmaking, choreography and public engagement, Critchley’s work highlights this looming ecological threat, prompting us to think about how we imagine and discuss the deep sea. Soundings includes a three-screen film which considers the nuanced debates around commercial deep sea mining of minerals.

What kind of a year has 2024 been for you? 2024 has been very busy! I have installed two of my murals, one in Spa Fields and one in St John’s Gardens, both in London, and I co-curated the show PARKED with Ishbel Mull at SPACE, London. PARKED first took place back in 2017 and was supposed to be an annual event but Covid and life got in the way. I was so thrilled that this year we got funding from a local business called Comptons, which enabled us to curate a second show.

What kind of year has 2024 been for you? In summary, by far my best year yet! It’s been rich with opportunities. While I was still studying I had my first exhibition in London, and did a BBC Shropshire radio interview about my work, and about how the second and the third Windrush generations have made a difference in our communities. In May I found out that I’d been nominated for the Freelands Painting Prize, and then later that I was a winner.

What kind of a year has 2024 been for you? It has been a madly busy year with so much going on. Looking back I can’t believe how much I have done and how busy I’ve been with barely any time to look up. I’m very, very lucky that I have extremely supportive colleagues where I teach in Camberwell who have made everything possible by being so incredibly flexible. It has been an incredible year. What would you say has been your major achievement this year and why?

What kind of a year has 2024 been for you? Intense. Inspiring. Hardworking. Filled with dismay and desperation over the state of the world. But also filled with hope and optimism, having witnessed an incredible amount of solidarity at work through my project for the Croatian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, which activated collective energy to make something happen.

Soft Impressions: Helen Cammock, Ingrid Pollard and Camara Taylora-n members Helen Cammock and Ingrid Pollard show alongside Camara Taylor in this inter-generational group exhibition that focuses on the artists’ printmaking practices, and reflects on the historic role of printmaking as a tool of political activism and propaganda. Pollard’s contribution includes a series of blind embossings titled Seventeen of Sixty-Eight.
