A woman shot and killed herself after making an attempt on her husband’s life outside of a Ponchatoula fast food restaurant late Monday afternoon, Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson said. A large crowd gathered at the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival on an idyllic spring afternoon Sunday, where only hours earlier gunshots rang out at the popular event for the second time in the past three years that sent two victims to the hospital. Minutes later, another shooting was reported at the Ponchatoula Community Center, two blocks from the festival grounds, where a third shooting victim t was found also suffering a leg wound.

The Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival will operate today but with limited hours. The festival will open with open with the scheduled 9 a.m. church service but closing time has been adjusted to 5 p.m., from the original 7 p.m.Sheriff Gerald Sticker, TPSO personnel and the dozen+ assisting agencies will continue to be stationed and patrolling the grounds and surrounding participating sections of downtown for the entirety of the final day, TPSO said.

Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron said he was not surprised by the City Council’s decision Tuesday night to petition Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill to look into a recent incident in which a suspect was tased while allegedly attempting to elude authorities. The council approved a resolution by Council President Kip Andrews to review the Feb. 10 incident involving Bobby Ray McCaskey and members of the Hammond Police Department for criminal investigation and potential prosecution.
