We are now a week into the ceasefire in Gaza. Two tranches of hostages have been released. The shocking hostage release circuses have shown Hamas’s cruelty to the world. As the dust settles, and with time allowed for reflection and consideration, it is a good time to take stock of where things stand. In doing so, we may draw conclusions about the IDF’s strategic and operational performance in Gaza since October 2023. Many critics, even me, have criticised the IDF for strategic failure.

World media reporting is that a ceasefire deal in Gaza is closer than ever before. Of course, media reporting over this conflict has not been reliable, but let us be generous and assume that, in this instance, it is. The headline issue is that, all going to plan, a terrible war will be over, innocent civilians on both sides can start to rebuild their lives, and the hostages will be free. These are objectively Good Things. On a human, compassionate level we should all be delighted.

Amnesty International today released their report into allegations of genocide in Gaza. To no-one’s surprise, they found the case conclusively proved. Their opening sentence gives a sense of the report: “On 7 October 2023, Israel embarked on a military offensive on the occupied Gaza Strip (Gaza) of unprecedented magnitude, scale and duration.”I beg your pardon? That’s the key event of 7 October as far as this report is concerned?

The International Criminal Court continues to beclown itself with a farcical case against Yoav Gallant and Benjamin Netanyahu. It is now plain that any western country aspiring to retain a war fighting capability must withdraw from the Treaty of Rome and the ICC’s jurisdiction. The international rules-based order is dead. It has been subverted and weaponised against us, both in the UN and the ICC.

This week, the UK media (and social media worldwide) was shocked by the testimony of Mr Nizam Mamode to the UK’s Parliament’s International Development committee. You can read his testimony online (including a link to watch the live recording). Before I continue, let us make certain facts perfectly clear. War is hell, and having seen the destruction in Gaza with my own eyes, I can support Professor Mamode’s testimony that the place contains an astonishing level of destruction.

I have just returned from my fourth trip to Israel this year. In previous visits, my reports focused on the high-level meetings I was fortunate to have. I have had hours with PM Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, the Foreign Minister, strategic planners at the IDF, an IDF targeting cell, and trips to meet 2* Major Generals in Southern Command and IDF fighting divisions. This trip was different. The focus was on Israeli civil life and the troops of the IDF: the lowest level.
