BOONE, N.C. — Nearly three weeks after Hurricane Helene hit Boone, Appalachian State University welcomed its students back to campus — and they returned with a desire to serve. On Saturday, Oct. 19, App State’s Office of Community-Engaged Leadership held its Student Day of Service - Together We Are Mountain Strong event, coordinating the volunteer work of around 175 students who collectively completed over 500 hours of community service at 15 organizations and locations across the High Country.

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University’s student-led, interdisciplinary solar vehicle team, Team Sunergy, achieved a podium finish after a strong showing in the 2024 Electrek American Solar Challenge (ASC), an international solar vehicle distance road race held biennially by the Innovators Educational Foundation. Team Sunergy also took home this year’s Spirit of the Event Award for its collegiality, cross-team collaboration, expertise and technical innovation.

RALEIGH, N.C. — University of North Carolina System President Peter Hans today announced the formation of a 13-member committee that will search for the next chancellor of Appalachian State University.
Deanna Ballard, a former state senator who represented Watauga County from 2016 to 2023, will chair the search advisory committee.
“I’m grateful to Sen. Ballard for agreeing to serve in this important role,” Hans said.

BOONE, N.C. — This fall, Appalachian State University will begin offering a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity — the only such program offered by a University of North Carolina System institution in Western North Carolina. The program, which will be available at the Boone and Hickory campuses, is also the first in the UNC System to be housed in a college of business.

About Memorial DayMemorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a day of remembrance for those who died in service to their country.
Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. The first national observance of Memorial Day took place May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery.
It is traditional to fly the U.S. flag at half-staff from dawn until noon.
