    The Miami Lady Vandals and San Carlos Lady Braves varsity basketball teams had met twice this season, with each winning in the other’s home gym, and Saturday’s third meeting – at San Carlos High School – would decide the 2A Valley champion. Both teams won easily in last week’s 2A Valley tournament semifinals: Miami with a 64-17 win over Gilbert Classical Academy, and San Carlos cruising past Leading Edge Academy-GEC 67-31.

    Next school year, Globe Unified School District will have its first female superintendent – and the first Globe High School graduate to serve in that position. In an end-of-January district governing board meeting, the district chose Deputy Superintendent/Human Resources Manager Dr. Christa DalMolin East from three final candidates to be its next superintendent. The board announced her selection, which was unanimous, after a 1½-hour executive session.

    March 17, 2024, will be a historic day in Globe-Miami: the centennial of the founding of Bullion Plaza School, now the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center & Museum, in west Miami. Over the weeks leading to that event, the Silver Belt will look back at parts of the building’s history. Bullion Plaza School was entered into the National Register of Historic Places on Jan. 4, 2001, with the signature of Keeper of the Register Edson Beall.

    The Globe Fire Department has joined other area public safety agencies in using a new radio system and will continue – along with Tri-City Fire District – to provide services in Miami. At the Jan. 23 Globe City Council meeting, councilmembers approved a subscription agreement with C & M Communications, LLC, a business with offices in Glendale and Payson, that will provide the Fire Department with 800mhz radio service for $10,000 a year.
