Lady Braves capture 2A Valley title

The Miami Lady Vandals and San Carlos Lady Braves varsity basketball teams had met twice this season, with each winning in the other’s home gym, and Saturday’s third meeting – at San Carlos High School – would decide the 2A Valley champion. Both teams won easily in last week’s 2A Valley tournament semifinals: Miami with a 64-17 win over Gilbert Classical Academy, and San Carlos cruising past Leading Edge Academy-GEC 67-31.
Globe Schools name DalMolin East next superintendent

Next school year, Globe Unified School District will have its first female superintendent – and the first Globe High School graduate to serve in that position. In an end-of-January district governing board meeting, the district chose Deputy Superintendent/Human Resources Manager Dr. Christa DalMolin East from three final candidates to be its next superintendent. The board announced her selection, which was unanimous, after a 1½-hour executive session.
Bullion Plaza: Preparing to turn 100

March 17, 2024, will be a historic day in Globe-Miami: the centennial of the founding of Bullion Plaza School, now the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center & Museum, in west Miami. Over the weeks leading to that event, the Silver Belt will look back at parts of the building’s history. Bullion Plaza School was entered into the National Register of Historic Places on Jan. 4, 2001, with the signature of Keeper of the Register Edson Beall.
Vandals take on Arete Prep

Globe Fire Department to acquire new radio system

The Globe Fire Department has joined other area public safety agencies in using a new radio system and will continue – along with Tri-City Fire District – to provide services in Miami. At the Jan. 23 Globe City Council meeting, councilmembers approved a subscription agreement with C & M Communications, LLC, a business with offices in Glendale and Payson, that will provide the Fire Department with 800mhz radio service for $10,000 a year.
Globe Council accepts federal street safety grant

The Globe City Council last week accepted a $124,846 federal grant award that will be used to explore making downtown streets safer, and approved $31,000 in matching funds from the city. The award for the “Downtown District” project was one of 385 fiscal year 2023 grants to local communities, through the Safe Streets and Roads for All program, that the U.S. Department of Transportation announced on December 13.
Flight from traffic stop leads to arrest in Claypool

A Claypool man was arrested and booked into the Gila County Jail on Jan. 22 after reportedly fleeing from an attempted traffic stop. A Gila County Sheriff’s Office deputy initiated the attempted stop, near Marion Street and US Highway 60, but the driver continued on, making a right turn onto Marion Street and reportedly running a stop sign during the pursuit. The driver, identified as 35-year-old Ruben Mageno, ultimately brought the vehicle to a stop. Mageno and a passenger then fled on foot.
Queen Creek Bridge replacement project begins on US 60

The Queen Creek Bridge just east of Superior, a structure that opened to traffic in 1949, is coming down. The Arizona Department of Transportation has begun a project to replace the 75-year-old steel arch bridge, along with the one over Waterfall Canyon just east of the Queen Creek Tunnel. The work is expected to be complete in early 2027. Motorists who travel US Highway 60 between Superior and Miami should plan for road closures – as many as three a week – as blasting operations are conducted.
GHS varsity soccer falls to Benjamin Franklin

The Lady Tigers’ suffered an 8-2 home loss to Benjamin Franklin last Thursday. Following the girls’ game, the boys’ varsity team fell 8-0 to the visiting Chargers. Lady Vandals earn road win at San Carlos

The top two girls’ varsity basketball teams in section 2A Valley, the San Carlos Lady Braves and Miami Lady Vandals, met for the second time this season Friday night in a packed San Carlos High gym. San Carlos had won their first game, a 49-44 victory in Miami on January 2. On Friday the visiting Lady Vandals returned the favor, topping the Lady Braves 66-50 to move into first place in 2A Valley – in a game where two players would be recognized for scoring 1,000 career points.
