To those with managerial experience who strive to do more, the climb does not always matter. It’s much about growing your impact. I work with many seasoned managers who are hungry to do more, learn more, and challenge themselves while finding new ways to contribute to their organizations. In many cases, they’re not interested in taking on the headaches of senior management, so climbing the ladder isn’t a primary driver. And for some, the climb is the goal.

Leaders charged with righting foundering organizations often claim “the culture is broken.” However, just as you cannot fix people, experience tells me that focusing on fixing a culture is a fool’s errand. Decision-making processes, communications, structure, strategy, and finances are all fixable. An organization’s culture evolves over time and not by command.

The annual January 1 calendar reset is the time many of us vow to do better. Whether it’s getting in shape, waking up and pursuing a dormant goal, or, as in the case of the leaders I work with, striving to be more effective for themselves and their team members in the upcoming period.
