The ca. 1920 row house, in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia, needed major repairs; it had been gutted by a fire in the 1970s. When considering curb appeal and hardware or metalwork, it’s natural to focus on the front door’s entry hardware. What about other very visible hardware? Take a look at the garage and outbuildings, which make up a lot of the visual real estate. Window shutters, so prominently displayed on the façade, also need appropriate hinges and holdbacks. Don’t forget the front gate, a good place for hefty period-style strap hinges and latch. The garage doors are another opportunity.
Reviving an Outdated Family Bath

With its arched openings and period lighting, the bathroom looks original to the 1940 Tudor Revival house in Portland, Oregon. Yet it’s the result of a sensitive remodeling that included moving the toilet and the sink and installing new tile and fixtures. The room is within the original footprint but it feels larger now. The existing bath, which served all the upstairs bedrooms, was awkward and cramped and offered almost no storage space.
