Barron News-Shield
The Barron News-Shield holds the title of the oldest business in the community, with its origins tracing back to November 1, 1876, when A. Dewey released the inaugural edition of the Barron County Shield. However, the Shield was not the very first newspaper in Barron; that distinction goes to the Barron County Gazette, which started its operations two years earlier in 1874. The Gazette was founded by C.W. Carpenter and W.L. Abott, who relocated the newspaper to Rice Lake in 1875 and renamed it the Rice Lake Chronotype.
