Takashi Yamazaki has had a prolific career in Japan, having directed over 28 films. He has won 6 Japanese Academy Awards and his films have grossed over 500 million worldwide. Known in Japan as a go-to director for blockbuster films with impressive VFX, he was a natural choice to be the next director of Toho’s 33rd Godzilla film. Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Yamazaki.

This past Friday, the Advanced Imaging Society had its 14th annual awards and it was a wonderful celebration of the best creative and technical achievements of the past year of film and television. Amid a very busy award season it was possibly the most thoughtful of the bunch, winners knew in advance and crafted eloquent speeches about craft. The event which took place at Beverly Hills Hotel moved swiftly and the batch of winners were all very deserving.

Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Poor Things is one of the most celebrated films of 2023, and for good reason. It is an absolute blast for the senses. It is the hyperreal story of a woman who is re-animated by a mad scientist — a story best experienced on the big screen, showcasing the spellbinding emotions and visuals. The crafts in the film are top-notch notch everything from the production, the art direction, set decor, music, makeup, and especially the unforgettable costumes in the film by Holly Waddington.

2023 was a great year for cinema, full of absolutely gorgeous films, a testament to all the splendid work by production designers, and in particular, the five nominated in the Production Design category at the Oscars, as well as those nominated by the Art Directors Guild (who will hand out their awards this coming Saturday, Feb. 10).
