Today, an all-white jury acquitted Demetrius Haley, Tadarrius Bean, and Justin Smith—the three former Memphis police officers on trial for the murder of Tyre Nichols. The jury, selected from the Chattanooga area—more than five hours from Memphis—found the men not guilty of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression. Jurors also declined to convict on any lesser charges.

A historically Black college in Mississippi is responding after U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s recent commencement speech drew threats. In a statement released Monday, Tougaloo President Donzell Lee condemned the threats and said the school was taking active measures to ensure the safety of students and the campus. “The school has received concerning calls regarding the commencement speech delivered by Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett. We are not taking these occurrences lightly.

Sheriff’s deputies fatally shot a teenager on Jan. 3 while conducting a search warrant at a local residence in Knoxville, Tennessee. According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, deputies approached a residence around 7:20 am as part of an ongoing investigation when they encountered 18-year-old Daevon Montez Saint-Germain. Authorities report that Saint-Germain displayed a firearm, leading deputies to respond with gunfire. The young man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lessie Benningfield Randle, one of the last two remaining survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre celebrated her 110th birthday on Nov. 10. Known as “Mother Randle,” she was joined by family, friends, and community leaders in Tulsa. U.S. Congressman Al Green honored the occasion by presentingher with a flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol in her name earlier this month.
