by Jace BausermanThe time of year many hunters wait for isn’t far away. Though the summer’s dog days are in full swing, there is work that needs done. The more you do now, the better off you’ll be when season arrives. Not to say you won’t have to make in-season adjustments; you very well may. However, if you heed the to-come tips your whitetail success will increase. Go Light & Stealthy For Big BucksIt happens all the time.

by Scott HaugenLast duck season, the handheld transmitter for my electronic dog collars died. I’d had it for nine years. It died right at the start of a day of duck hunting. The weather was bad for communicating with my dogs but great for duck hunting. It was raining hard, blowing 20 mph, gusting up to 35. Since I couldn’t communicate with Echo or Kona via the usual beeping of their e-collars, I had to rely on whistles and hand signals.

I love bear hunting, especially for big bears late in the spring. The end of May marks the start of the bear rut. Big boars can cover up to 25 miles daily in the West’s most rugged terrain, sniffing and searching for a sow in heat. This is a time of vulnerability and opportunity for hunters. I’ve chased bears for 40 years. From the Western states to Alaska and parts of Canada, for black, grizzly, and polar bears, these hunts always excite me.

by Jace BausermanI’ve written about Xpedition Archery for years in several bow roundups. What is a bow roundup? It’s pretty straightforward. The outdoor writing world gets press releases, photos, MSRP, etc., from bow makers about new-for-the-year compounds. Writers read those press releases, research, and compile a roundup of that year’s latest and greatest. A bow test is much different. I’m not discrediting the roundups; they are essential.

by Jace BausermanFew things trump getting a youngster involved in archery/bowhunting. Not only are you passing on a time-honored tradition, but you’re passing on something that has likely, in many ways, shaped who you are as a person. Seeing that fire ignite in another — watching them grow in their newfound discipline — provides a level of enjoyment that is hard to match. The key is making sure their experience is a positive one.
