It’s been a short week, but we’re still ready for the weekend and this one is jam-packed with foodie freebies. Saturday is apparently National Pretzel Day (yep, every day is national something or other day) and this means free pretzels at Auntie Anne’s at their Churchill Square (from 9.30am) and Brighton station (from 8am) locations if you’re passing through. The first 100 people will get theirs free. Read on for more foodie freebies, festivals, gigs and other good stuff.

How’s your festive spirit level? Non-existent or overflowing with mulled wine? Now the lights are up and the temperatures are down, it’s all starting to feel a lot more Christmassy out there. It may still be only November, but with most of the winter fairs kicking off this weekend, Xmas tree farms opening, light trails starting up, and mince pies in the bakeries, we reckon it’s time to give in to the fun.

We’ve been wondering this week how we’re still always so very surprised at the fact that it’s rainy/windy/sunny/dark/cold (delete as appropriate) at any given moment. “I can’t believe how dark it is already” we’ve said in numerous conversations this week. It’s the end of the summer, OF COURSE it’s getting darker. It literally happens every year. Why are we like this? Answers on a postcard, please.

You will be. Smoothie supremos Innocent are heading down to the beach with their ‘ice-cream van with a twist’ this weekend. They’ll be handing out fresh fruit cones inspired by their smoothie recipes, as part of their mission to get more people eating fruit and veg.

This intro is sadly a bit of a departure from our usual flippant fun as it’s been a heavy week with riots sweeping the country. But true to form, Brighton came through, meeting hate with an incredible display of love and solidarity on Wednesday evening. A 2,000-strong crowd of anti-racism protesters filled the street by Brighton station, far outweighing the far-right contingent of around eight.

The UK’s only LGBTQ+ literature festival is back in Brighton for its fifth season in October and, while the programme is yet to be released, we’re confident there will be another fantastic line-up celebrating queer lives and writing. Set up by non-profit New Writing South and queer-led arts producer Marlborough Productions, the festival celebrates queer lives and writing through a variety of workshops, films, in-conversation events, cabaret, dancing and spoken word.

Ease opened its North Laine cafe – decked out in gorgeous shades of green and blush – on Tuesday 9th July and we’re looking forward to popping in for a cup of the hot stuff.
