Everything from The Beatles in early concert footage to horse and buggy scenes in old New York or even astonishing updates of classic films such as “Metropolis” just looks more relatable and modern in colour, especially when cleaned and digitized to 5K standards. Take Britain and the Blitz, which premiered May 5 on Netflix.

Wednesday’s Toronto Maple Leafs win over Florida Panthers in Round 2 NHL Stanley Cup action approached the three million mark in overnight viewers. An estimated, average minute audience of 2,874,000 watched on Sportsnet National (1,555,000) and CBC (1,319,000). Add in the viewers who also streamed on digital platforms and the game certainly would have topped the three million mark. Sportsnet also drew 779,000 for the late Wednesday Winnipeg Jets game against the Dallas Stars.

The Winnipeg Jets come-from-behind overtime victory over the St. Louis Blues Sunday night drew a combined 2.2 mllion overnight, estimated viewers. The NHL’s regular-season leaders scored with 1.6 seconds to tie the game and send it to overtime. The four-hour-plus, double overtime game was watched by an average minute audience of 1,227,000 on Sportsnet National and another 957,000 viewers on the Total CBC network. Sunday was not an especially competitive night.

This happened a couple of weeks ago now but it was so disappointing I had to let the fumes disappear first. I’m talking about that final episode of The Conners. Here was a reboot that lasted seven seasons and 112 episodes. It followed ten seasons of one of the top-rated sitcoms of the ’90s, Roseanne. ABC ordered this final six-episode season and it was, without question, the weakest part of the entire two-series epic. Some episodes seemed to have been written on the back of an envelope.

Before there was Kate McKinnon, or Maya Rudolph, or Kristen Wiig or even Gilda Radner there was Ruth Buzzi. A standout on the sketch comedy hit Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, Buzzi died May 1 at her home in Texas. She was 88. The Golden Globe award winner and Emmy nominee’s well-named spinster character, Gladys Ormphby, could be counted on to sock-it to Arte Johnson’s dirty old man at least once an episode. Laugh-In ran from 1968 to ’73 and was TV’s No. 1 rated series in 1968-69 and 1969-70.
