"The Brown Network" was established in 1936 as the nation’s first student-operated radio station. Initially, it was a carrier-current AM station that served the Brown University dormitories. Later, the station was renamed to "WBRU-AM." In 1966, some members of the station obtained a loan from the university to launch WBRU-FM (95.5), while others maintained the AM station’s focus on student programming. WBRU-FM evolved into a commercial entity that was financially and legally independent from Brown University, while WBRU-AM continued to serve the Brown community and the nearby areas in the spirit of college radio. Over time, the AM signal became nearly impossible to hear.
