The Canal & River Trust is announcing the appointment of Campbell Robb as its new chief executive. Campbell will be joining the charity on 6 October, after six years leading the social justice charity Nacro as its chief executive. Canal & River Trust is the UK’s largest canal charity, caring for a 2,000-mile network of canals and navigable rivers that connect many urban and rural areas.
Fund Britain’s Waterways Takes Warning to Westminster

Government received a wake-up call today from waterways campaigning group, Fund Britain’s Waterways, as it takes its message to Westminster. A flotilla of boats today stopped by the Palace of Westminster as the call to safeguard Britain’s inland waterways reached the heart of government. A colourful 26-strong flotilla delivered a clear message to the nation’s policy makers from the Thames to protect the future of our waterways.

More unsafe boats on waterways says RCR - Canal Boat

River Canal Rescue is concerned over the increasing number of unsafe boats cruising the waterways. The marine breakdown assistance company estimates around 16% of its 3,500 yearly call-outs are due to poor electrical/wiring installations and battery connections, safety lapses and carbon monoxide exposure; up from 12% 18 months ago. Examples include live 240V cables hanging in the bilges, overloaded electrical connections, surplus battery wires and badly-fitting diesel lines.

The former BBC news reader, Adam Porter, has launched a new canal-based podcast, The Water Road, after starting a new life afloat. Adam left the BBC in March after 24 years, during which time he was best known for reading the news on Radio 2, 6Music, and 5live. He also appeared on the Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, and the late Steve Wright always called him Captain on air, because of his canal boat. He and his husband, Adrian, have moved out of their house and onto their narrowboat.
Protect again fuel theft

River Canal Rescue is advising boat owners to put a lock on their fuel caps after witnessing numerous cases of stolen fuel. Managing director, Stephanie Horton, warns: “Fuel siphoning from tanks is sadly becoming a common issue, and it’s nationwide. We can’t tell if the thieves are getting to boats via the towpath or on the water, but to deter them, put a separate lock on your fuel cap.”Perished fuel cap seals are another problem, as they allow water to enter the fuel tank and cause diesel bug.
