Hello! I’m on my period and I just napped so long that I thought I was coming out of a coma. It was slightly terrifying, but now I’m on the mend thanks to Diet Coke and Extra Toasty Cheez-its!! Last night I was lying in bed with my dude talking about the disturbing number of substack posts that are just about being successful on substack. Gross!! It’s so embarrassing?! I know this is what happens on the internet but witnessing it in real life on here is soooo cringe.

I’ve been thinking about the tons and tons of silly gag cartoons I’ve drawn over all the years and how when they’re not published, I hide them away in my files. I realized last week, I have no clue what I’m hiding them for. My death? A posthumous collection?! How chic of me! So I decided to start another thing on here to add to my sketchbook dumps, diary comics, dailies and poetry.

Pretty please if you enjoy reading my cartoons, become a paid subscriber. As a freelance artist I’m literally always scraping by. I was giggling to myself this morning about the phrase “Living hand to mouth” because it sounds like I eat money, but maybe I am eating cash?? Is that where it’s all going?? Are you able to wake up in the morning? How many friggin times have I brought this up??? I am always thinking about my favorite Sam Gross cartoon (RIP).

It has taken me centuries to figure out how to smile correctly. Well, correct for me at least, my parents and I probably still differ on this. Everyone has the way the want to look in pictures and then there’s reality. Reality being, all of the photos of me on Facebook from 2008-2013. They’re horrifying, but I also don’t have the energy to go untag myself from every party in college I attended.

For some reason when I began submitting cartoons to The New Yorker in 2016, I also felt inclined to keep all of the guest passes I received in order to get into the building. The horrible digital photos they took of you as you went through security in 1 World Trade felt like like visual poetry. Who is she?? An artist? A murderer? A weather girl???

I cannot believe I haven’t done a sketchbook dump since October. Who even… am I? To answer my own question, this month I am someone who finished their second graphic memoir. HA! INSANE! UNBELIEVABLE! Or, very believable, as it took me 4 years to draw and was my entire existence. The Joy of Snacking goes on sale August 26th, but you can pre-order it now, preferably not from Amazon. I finished the book the week of my birthday and then hopped on a plane to see my family (and Nate Bargatze!) in Vegas.

I wasn’t going to write a Valentine’s newsletter until I realized the day would line up with my weekly release so it seemed like I had had no choice but to acknowledge the day. Please don’t hate me. I’ve drawn a lot of love cartoons over the years. You might even say that’s been the bulk of my work. Love, or loss thereof. It’s the stuff of life, the only thing a book is ever really about, and every song on the radio. Not that I need to remind you.
