Chanute Tribune
The Chanute Tribune started as a small publication with 4 columns and 4 pages, founded by G.M. Dewey on April 8, 1892, with H.P. Hutton serving as the editor. In 1900, on September 6, Dewey sold the newspaper to J.M. Cavaness, who was later succeeded by his sons, Herbert and Wilfred, three years later. The brothers teamed up with Parks Helmick, and on October 31, 1905, they incorporated the Chanute Daily Blade into their operations. Four years after that, the brothers collaborated with A.R. Blakely and Fred Brinkerhoff to create a stock company called The Tribune Publishing Company, which then took over the Chanute Morning Star.

ERIE — Area teams converged on Prairie Ridge Golf Course for the Erie Invitational Boys Golf Tournament on Monday. Although it is known for being a straightforward yet frustrating 9-hole course due to high winds across the plains, Prairie Ridge was near calm for the tournament. This allowed for a number of solid scores. Humboldt freshman Connor Newman won his third-straight tournament of the year with a 10-stroke victory.

HUMBOLDT — It took just nine innings for the Humboldt Cubs to sweep the Bluestem Lions here Monday. The Cubs posted a 15-0 win in four innings in the early game before notching a 13-1 win in five innings. Humboldt’s success on the night can largely be attributed to the pitching staff. Seniors Blake Ellis, Brody Gunderman, Kyler Isbell, Cole Mathes, and Logan Page combined to allow a single earned run on three hits with a combined 19 strikeouts.

A pair of squads took the court for Chanute on Tuesday as the Blue Comets welcomed Fort Scott, Iola, Independence, and Ottawa for a boys tennis tournament at the Chanute Community Sports Complex. The Chanute Blue team finished runner- up, while the Chanute Gold squad came in fourth. Chanute’s home tournament, just the second meet of the year for the Blue Comets, came after a less-than-ideal stretch of practice days — or lack thereof.
