    The founder of Misericordia, a Chicago-based nonprofit serving children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities, is being remembered for “shaking society from prejudices” against disabled individuals. Sister Rosemary Connelly, RSM, died Thursday at Misericordia Heart of Mercy. She was 94. She guided Misericordia for more than 50 years.

    After months of uncertainty and urgent repairs, the Metamora Community Pool has reopened. The facility at 116 N. Douglas St. began welcoming swimmers June 13, following a delay caused by infrastructure repairs and a wait for a critical state inspection. While the baby pool remains under construction, the main pool is open and ready for laps and cannonballs. “This is a huge moment for our town,” the Metamora Park District shared in a post on the Metamora Swimming Pool Facebook page.

    Jeff Stevens was sworn in as the Washington chief of police June 10 after the City Council amended its residency requirement for chief. A 1991 city ordinance had required the Washington chief of police to live within the city limits within six months of appointment. That wasn’t a problem, until former Chief of Police Mike McCoy retired. McCoy, a Washington resident,  spent the last eight years of a 48-year career in law enforcement as Washington’s police chief.

    Food Bank fills gap with free kids meals Chronicle Media — With schools closed for the summer, the Geneva-based Northern Illinois Food Bank is once again stepping up to cover a meal gap for kids and teens across the area. With no free or reduced-priced school meals available during summer, NIFB plans to serve up to 7,500 free meals across 13 counties through mid-August.

    A McHenry man was charged with three felonies and two misdemeanors involving two occurrences of residential burglary on June 5. Patrick Anderson, 44, was arrested following a standoff involving McHenry police using multiple personnel and two armored SWAT trucks in a subdivision near Venice Avenue and Court Street. McHenry police requested that residents and bystanders avoid the area next to the Fox River, around midday June 5.
