A CKLB reporter spoke with some of those at the Aspen Apartments parking lot today. We were told all the extra garbage has mostly been abandoned by former tenants of the camp, many of whom are now set up beside a trail behind the NWT Legislative Assembly building.

Investigation underway after Giant Mine water spill

Roughly 40,000 litres of waste water containing arsenic has spilled at the Giant Mine site in Yellowknife earlier this month. Although there are no immediate impacts to the surrounding area, Meghan Housley, senior communications officer for the Giant Mine Remediation Project says a final and more detailed report is expected within 30 days of the incident. The spill occurred on Sept 3, for what a report describes is due to a malfunctioning valve used to release air from a pump system.

Eugene Hope was re-elected chief of Acho Dene Ko First Nation on Thursday. That is according to preliminary results posted on the community’s Facebook page. Hope won the seat with a wide margin ringing in 158 votes, Brenda Berreault received 75 and Vanessa Villeneuve had 15. However, Berreault and Villeneuve find themselves acclaimed as part of council. They join Donny Bertrand, Morris McLeod and Dennis Nelson. Out of roughly 445 residents, 251 voted and three ballots were spoiled.
