It represents something remarkable: The coordinated effort of more than 60 Colorado newsrooms to ask voters in their communities what issues matter most to them this election year. And not just to ask. But also to listen. To let voter voices help guide election coverage and hold candidates accountable for responding to citizens’ priorities. Some of our state’s newsrooms have done this kind of voter-centered election coverage in past elections.

Our latest multi-newsroom reporting collaboration wrapped on Sunday. The four-part series, “Last Resort” examines the slow-motion collapse of specialized schools most Coloradans likely do not know exist. Thousands of Colorado students attend what the state calls “facility schools.” These schools provide a combination of therapy and academics to children and young people with intense mental and behavioral health needs.

We’re out with our latest local reporting collaboration and, while I’m proud of all of them, this one stands out because it builds upon some staggering national reporting done by our colleagues at KFF Health News over the last couple of years. It also represents a slight, but significant change in the way COLab is trying to help newsrooms serve their communities.

Something pretty remarkable happened last Thursday in Denver on the third floor of the Buell Public Media Center, COLab’s home base. As about 100 people gathered, a lively (and thirsty and hungry) crowd of journalists and community members, we launched the first-ever online statewide source guide to Coloradans from diverse backgrounds, people willing to share their experiences and expertise with local reporters.
