Wall Street’s increasing penetration into the single-family home market is at the core of the upheaval. It all began in 2007, when a large number of “adjustable-rate mortgages” (or “ARMs”), also known as subprime mortgages, reached the date at which their loan rates were due to be reset. These “ARMS” had previously allowed millions of families to buy homes.
