    Care placement costs are continuing to drive up spending on children’s services, data on council budgets for 2025-26 have shown. Councils are planning to spend £15.5bn on children’s social care in 2025-26, up by £1bn (7.1%) in real terms on budgeted spend for 2024-25, proportionately higher than the 6.3% increase for planned local government expenditure as a whole, according to Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) figures.

    About the CQC’s local authority assurance systemAll 153 councils in England are being assessed over a two-year period, starting in December 2023, on their performance in relation to their duties under the Care Act 2014. Authorities receive an overall rating: ‘outstanding’, ‘good’, ‘requires improvement’ or ‘inadequate’. Of the first 43 councils to receive an assessment report, one has been rated outstanding (Camden), 26 good, 16 requires improvement and none inadequate.

    Assisted dying is set to become legal in England and Wales after MPs gave legislation to bring it about their backing. The House of Commons voted by 314 to 291 in favour of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill at the final stage of its passage through the House of Commons today. The bill will now go to the House of Lords, where it will be voted on and face further scrutiny.

Adults’ social workers at Brighton & Hove Council took three days’ strike action in late 2023 in pursuit of a 12.5% market supplement on top of their salary – as received by their counterparts in children’s services.
