Launched in 1971 by Brian Sumner, Costa Blanca News originated as an English-language section in the Ciudad newspaper in Alcoy. Due to its popularity, this single-page feature evolved into a full-fledged newspaper by 1973, marking the official establishment of Costa Blanca News. Over the years, it has flourished and was recognized with a nomination for Valencia’s Best Company award at the Nova Prizes in 2002. Published every Friday for just €2, Costa Blanca News reaches a readership of over 100,000. It is distributed from Almería to Castellón and is available at most major airports. The main office in Finestrat oversees the operations of several publications within the newsgroup, including Costa del Sol News, Costa Almería News, and Costa Levante News.     Five people were injured in a collision in Torrevieja town centre this morning. Two of the victims are in a serious condition. A spokesperson for the local police force said the accident occurred at the junction of Calle Joaquín Chapaprieta and Calle Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. He noted that witnesses said one of the vehicles jumped a stop sign and smashed into another vehicle which was driving correctly. Two people were cut out of their car by the fire brigade.

    A serious forest fire is affecting a mountainous area of inland Alicante province. More than 100 people have been evacuated from their homes in Penaguila. The blaze broke out at around 15.00 yesterday close to the water purification station in Benasau, where work was taking place. In their report at 08.00 this morning, the regional emergency services HQ stated that three aircraft are already working on the fire and they will be joined by four more.

    Very hot weather is due to affect large swathes of Spain in the coming days. The whole of Alicante province is on alert for high temperatures tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday. State weather agency AEMET has placed the interior of the province on orange alert tomorrow as temperatures could reach 40c. And the same is forecast for Thursday when the mercury is due to hit 40c again in some inland areas of Alicante.

    A 32-year-old Briton has been arrested at Alicante-Elche airport in connection with an attempted murder in Germany. The martial arts expert is accused of taking part in an unprovoked attack on two American soldiers as they came out of a restaurant. According to the international arrest warrant, he continued to hit the victims as they lay unconscious on the ground. The soldiers suffered serious injuries in the attack on June 2.
