Courier Journal

Courier Journal

The Courier Journal, originally known as the Florence Herald, started its journey in 1884. For many years, it stood out as the leading newspaper in Northwest Alabama, catering exclusively to subscribers. Over time, the publication underwent several transformations. A significant ownership change in 1982 led to positive updates, including a new name, mission, and a shift to the highly effective method of direct mail distribution. Today, the Courier Journal is well-regarded and acknowledged at local, state, and national levels.

Dear Dave,How do you feel about the leasing programs automotive manufacturers offer their employees? I’ve listened to your show enough to know you don’t recommend leasing the traditional way through a dealership. BakerDear Baker,I’d advise investigating the details of any deal like this very carefully. Some manufacturer offers, even ones to employees, are nothing more than another way for the company to fleece more drivers.

Dear Dave,  I’m 26, so I haven’t had time to accumulate a lot of money yet through my career. I do have a good, full-time job, though, and have started saving money. Do I need a will or trust when I’m so young and have so little in terms of assets?  Alisha  Dear Alisha,  I love the fact that you’re already thinking about things like this. You’re a wise young lady.  Considering that you’re young and just starting out, you don’t need anything complicated in place.

Last week’s commentary included a reference to scammers and others who exploit the weak, innocent, and unknowing for profit or satisfaction. Much of it falls back to a greedy nature, the opportunity to hoard, to get something for nothing or beat somebody out of something unwittingly. And it often backfires. Things as simple as moving credit card debt to zero interest cards for 90 days with plans on moving the debt again before interest starts accumulating is financial Russian roulette.

Merriam-Webster defines a scam in two ways. 1: to deceive and defraud (someone)2: to obtain (something, such as money) by a scam. The proliferation of phone, text, email, and internet scams has overshadowed much of what are now basic communication functions. It is understandable how seniors are more susceptible to financial scams and young people are more at risk of becoming victims of sexual predators and human traffickers.

Dear Dave, My wife and I are going through a divorce, and she just had our first child. Under the circumstances, I feel it’s my responsibility to take care of her for a while longer, and to put her and our son in a safe, new vehicle. She’s driving a 2002 Chevy Prizm right now with lots of miles on it. I’m afraid any kind of accident could result in a disaster. Do you think I should buy her a bigger, safer new car?  Ewan Dear Ewan,God bless you both. And that little boy.
