    A family-run Eden village inn has closed for the foreseeable future after a car crashed into the building, causing extensive damage. Stephen Wilcock, owner of Shepherds Inn at Langwathby, has vowed to rebuild and return “better and stronger” after a crash at around 4am on Wednesday. A Ford driver and passenger sustained minor injuries. Extensive damage was caused to the dining room area of the premises. A structural engineer was due to assess the scene yesterday.

    A former Penrith Queen Elizabeth Grammar School student is achieving national recognition in a contest to find Britain’s best young chef — having reached the finals of the celebrated 2025 Roux Scholarship competition. Katherine Altham, born and raised in the Penrith area, had an impressive academic career, also attending Oxford University where she earned a first-class BA in Oriental studies (Egyptology).

    Charity shop workers in Penrith are fed up with people dumping piles of “donations” on the pavement outside their premises, and say that this regular “fly tipping” is causing them a big headache. Items left outside charity shops become damaged by rain, wind, and also attract vermin as well as vandals. Shops report having to pay to have the bags removed.

    Ambitious plans for the restoration to a natural state of the RSPB reserve at Geltsdale, in the North Pennines, were unveiled on Monday. The plans are intended to create a “Pennines Paradise” and will involve moorland restoration, woodland expansion, wetland creation and hay meadow regeneration to support species such as hen harriers, black grouse and otters.
