When Hammond spurred his classmates to start a pollinator garden project in 2021, they leaped into action. His volunteers have now planted three dozen gardens in the Upper Valley, including 20 on campus. “Everyone benefits. It’s apolitical, and it’s not too difficult,” says Hammond, who runs a nonprofit, Creating Habitats for Pollinators (CHP). As coverage of last spring’s Boston Marathon bombings reminded us, people test themselves for more than 26 miles at a clip for a lot of different reasons—often nothing to do with fitness or a runner’s personal passion for sport. What was especially stunning about Boston was the juxtaposition of terrorism against families celebrating together. When Skate Club members meet on Thursdays, they grab air and stick landings—with varying degrees of ease and expertise. The action takes place at their new skate park, a set of ramps, pipes, and rails on the roof deck of Maxwell Hall. Last year, founders Malik Terrab ’25 and Asher Lord ’25 nailed $5,000 in funding from the Dartmouth Outing Club to equip the park. The money also helps with helmets and boards, although many skaters have their own. The deck isn’t large, but “it skates,” Terrab says.
