As they warmed up prior to Monday’s match against Scituate, Peter Burnham, Willy Pierce, Lucas Pratt and Nick Gallagher didn’t look nervous or overwhelmed. They lightheartedly covered the court with a youthful exuberance and joked with one another about line calls and more. This was just another day at the office. For many, adjusting to expanded roles would be an insurmountable challenge. For this group, which has plenty of varsity experience and talent, it’s business as usual.

As they bounced down to the dock at the Watuppa Rowing Center in Fall River last Sunday, the Duxbury crew seniors carried themselves like a group of sleepaway camp friends gearing up for the final few weeks. They cracked jokes, reminisced about the past four years and managed to work together to avoid falling or dropping any valuables in the water. For as much as high school crew is about collectively striving for greatness, it’s just as much about forming lifelong memories and lasting bonds.

The day of the Patriot League Championship this winter, junior sprinter Ian McNeil found himself the sickest he’s ever been. McNeil had a fever of 102 degrees, a nasty cough that wouldn’t go away and a burning sensation in his throat. “It was pretty painful,” McNeil said. “But I guess it just helped me run faster.”McNeil set a personal record of 6.74 in the prelims, then one-upped himself with another PR of 6.66 in the finals to capture fourth overall and highlight a league all-star season.
