Escapism (Toronto)

At WE THINK TRAVEL, we believe that traveling should involve more than just packing your bags, boarding a flight, and rushing to the nearest beach. Our audience seems to share this belief, as escapism has become the largest independent travel magazine in the UK, distributing 101,749 copies for free across London each month. In late 2017, we expanded our horizons to Toronto, introducing our acclaimed travel magazine to this vibrant city. Following the successful launch of our sister publication, foodism, escapism Toronto aims to deliver the same candid and engaging perspective on travel that foodism has brought to the local culinary scene.

Toronto is not without its share of localized retreats, from sauna and ice bath studios like Alter to Leslieville's movement space Chi Junky. However, there's something special about leaving the Big Smoke behind, turning your phone on airplane mode, and fully zenning out without all of that city static in the background. One hour north of the city, I check into The Liberty Inn, a Nordic spa hotel in Caledon.

Fresh from my first two cruises, I’m not (yet) an expert. But, I’d safely call the brand-new MSC World America a unicorn: She brings five-star sophistication, diverse palate-pleasers, uninterrupted zen, world-class talent, adrenaline rushes and uninhibited parties. She really has it all. The ultramodern, 6,762-passenger MSC World America made her inaugural journey on April 12, 2025, following a glamorous ribbon-cutting by her Godmother, Hollywood star Drew Barrymore.

I’ve been stuck in a rut. Even when your job is as exciting as being a food and travel writer, the banality of everyday life can be taxing. So, when I get the chance to go on Jen Fabel’s Soulful Radiance Retreat, I jump at the opportunity. I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve gone on spa weekends and wellness getaways that are all about escaping from life to carve out time for self-care in the form of healthy indulgence and pampering. This Ontario wellness retreat is entirely different.

Getting a massage is a wonderful treat, but it's not a routine part of our schedules. Or should it be? Touch Massage Bar, which recently launched its second location on Eglinton, certainly believes that self-care should be an everyday luxury.

Open for over a decade, The Bruce Hotel has established itself as a destination worth making the trip to Stratford for. It’s received the coveted AAA/CAA Four-Diamond status since opening, and snagged Five-Diamond recognition the past two years (it’s the only boutique hotel in Canada to hold this honour). Named after the owner’s late father, The Bruce is spread across 6.5 acres of landscaped property. Despite its size, the hotel is charming in its details and service.
