In interwar Denmark, the writer Aksel Sandemose came up with a concept that would come to define his home country, and Scandinavia as a whole: the law of Jante. Named after a fictional town, the gist of the 10 so-called laws is that nobody was to think they were anything special, or better than anyone else. One was of all the people I met who fought in the war, but particularly a man my family knew as Uncle Ned. He was a quiet and reserved man.

Shortly before his death Pope Francis wrote: "Peace-making requires courage, much more so than warfare." These are not words that are frequently cited in his obituary. Not everybody wants peace. Peace is not only about the territory but also about beliefs and loyalties. The land sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims has known endless wars. It is a land where the cycle of violence is repeating itself, leaving behind a long trace of mistrust, fear and broken promises.
