CNC meets to discuss new soccer stadium proposal in EverettThe Charlestown Neighborhood Council held a special neighborhood meeting Sept. 26 to form a soccer stadium committee, and the results were productive. With CNC Chair Tom Cunha presiding, the Council met with a group of residents and determined that a main committee and four sub-committees will be established once the change in language is made by legislators that would allow for the site in Everett to be used for a new soccer stadium.
Chief Paul Strong provides Council with update on his first few months in office

Everett Police Chief Paul Strong appeared at the City Council meeting Monday night to talk about his first two months in office. Strong became chief on July 1, 2024, succeeding Steve Mazzie. City Councilor Peter Pietrantonio had requested the update on “how the first couple of months have gone, and if Strong has implemented any new policies under his direction.”City Council President Robert Van Campen officially welcomed Strong to the meeting in the Council Chambers.

McGonagle wins Democratic primary for State Rep.

Rep. Joseph McGonagle secured the Democratic nomination in the Sept. 3 primary election in Everett. McGonagle showed strength at the polls across the city, garnering 1,494 votes to defeat Councilor-at-Large Michael Marchese, who received 718 votes. There is no Republican candidate in the race, so McGonagle will be unopposed in the Nov. 5 general election for the 28th Middlesex District seat. McGonagle said he was grateful to the residents of Everett for their support.

The Everett High football team made some costly mistakes and Mansfield High took full advantage, handing the Crimson Tide a 45-14 defeat in the season opener Friday night at Everett Veterans Memorial Stadium. Everett High football fans no doubt were expecting a hard-fought battle to the finish when quarterback Carlos Rodriguez connected with Yariel Ortiz for their second of two touchdowns with 3:36 left to play in the first half, making it a three-point (17-14) game.

Mayor Carlo DeMaria said he was “disheartened” by the City Council’s 6-4 vote to not approve an order requesting to borrow $3 million to fund improvements to Everett Square. During an appearance at Monday night’s meeting, Mayor DeMaria articulated well his vision for historic Everett Square and noted that the actual cost of the $5 million project would decrease by 80 percent to roughly $1 million, thanks to a $1.4 million grant by the Mass.

The decision on Sen. Sal DiDomenico’s legislation that would allow the Kraft Group to build a new soccer stadium on the site of a former power plant in Everett is imminent. The Senate passed its economic development bill last Thursday, advancing DiDomenico’s request to a joint conference committee of three state representatives and three state senators. “The vote [by the Senate] is an exciting development for our community and for the region,” said DiDomenico.
