PRESS RELEASE – On Thursday, May 15, 2025, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit (CSU), in conjunction with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s (GBI) Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO), executed a search warrant at a residence in the area of Lake Harbor Trail in Martin as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation. During the search, investigators and agents located approximately 45 grams of suspected methamphetamine inside the residence.

HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. – On Tuesday, May 27th, 2025, Deputy Michael Manson, part of our Crime Suppression Operational Interstate Task Force, was on I-20 working traffic enforcement when he observed a White Dodge Charger with illegally tinted windows. Deputy Manson initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and when he approached the vehicle, he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ga. – The GBI has arrested and charged Emaleigh Smith, age 23, of Elberton, GA, with Providing Items Prohibited for Possession by Inmates, Crossing of Guard Lines with Intoxicants, and Violation of Oath by Public Office. On May 22, 2025, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to investigate a Franklin County jailer that was allegedly supplying contraband to inmates. Smith was identified as the jailer providing the contraband.

HART COUNTY, Ga. – On May 23, 2025, at approximately 7:25 p.m., a deputy with the Hart County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on Marsh Lane near the intersection of Royston Highway. The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Codney Jermaine Alexander, age 44, of Canon, Georgia, and requested that he step out of the vehicle due to an active warrant for his arrest. Upon exiting the vehicle, Alexander attempted to flee on foot.

HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga.  – A Habersham County Grand Jury recently indicted Corey Cantrell, age 28, of Gainesville, GA, on Aggravated Involuntary Manslaughter for Sale of Fentanyl and Possession of a controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl in connection to the fentanyl overdose death of Sidney Cantrell. On January 19, 2025, the GBI Appalachian RDEO was requested by the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office to investigate a suspected fentanyl overdose death.
