Fishing News is backing a new initiative to generate wider awareness of UK seafood and everything that is good about our industry, with Clyde-based Ian Wightman one of the many fishermen who have already registered their support. For a 24-hour period on 15 May, cookery writer Jenny Jefferies and SAGB chair Mike Warner are calling on people across the seafood sector to add the #Fish24 hashtag to their social media posts.

It’s been a hectic few weeks since nominations closed for the 2025 Fishing News Awards, with the FN team assessing all of the nominees and drawing up a shortlist for each of the categories. The quality ofthe nominations each year means that there are always difficult decisions to be made, with many more deserving candidates than we are able to shortlist. We are delighted to now be able to reveal the shortlists for the categories in the 2025 awards that will be decided by a public vote.

BY BRIAN W LAVERYYorkshire-born maritime artist Jack Rigg’s work is seen on the mantelpieces of fishermen and on the walls of the homes of the wealthy. For years images created by the self-taught artist and former millhand featured on charity Christmas cards produced by the Fishermen’s Mission. Despite his fame his art is widely accessible, and although his paintings can sell for thousands of pounds, there are also prints of his work available at a fraction of the cost.

Two fishermen were safely rescued after their vessel, Gloria Dawn PW 26, struck rocks and sank off the coast of Cornwall on the afternoon of Sunday, 2 March. The incident occurred at The Rumps, near Polzeath, prompting a swift response from emergency services. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) received a distress call at around 3.20pm reporting that a fishing boat had hit rocks and was taking on water.
