Fishing communities and seafood lovers alike took to social media on 15 May to participate in the #Fish24 campaign. The initiative, designed to highlight the hard work and dedication of those in the fishing industry and promote the consumption of fresh, sustainable seafood, gained significant traction throughout the morning and early afternoon. The 24-hour online buzz was kicked off early by CJ Jackson at Billingsgate Market at 5am.

Both sides have claimed victory in the arbitration of the long-running dispute between the UK and EU over the UK sandeel ban, which Danish fishermen say is costing them £40m a year. The majority of British news outlets reported the judges’ decision as a ‘victory’ for the UK – either over the EU, or as a ‘victory for puffins’ – in spite of the fact that the science has repeatedly shown that breeding success of UK puffins has little or no link to the sandeel stocks on the Dogger Bank.

Fishing News is backing a new initiative to generate wider awareness of UK seafood and everything that is good about our industry, with Clyde-based Ian Wightman one of the many fishermen who have already registered their support. For a 24-hour period on 15 May, cookery writer Jenny Jefferies and SAGB chair Mike Warner are calling on people across the seafood sector to add the #Fish24 hashtag to their social media posts.
