The incubation period for eggs is dependent on the type of bird or waterfowl that laid the eggs. Hatching chicks is such a fun, economical way to expand your backyard chicken or other type of poultry  flock. Whether you have a rooster (or drake, gander) and can set eggs from your own flock or purchase fertile hatching eggs, whether you use an incubator or have a broody hen willing to sit on eggs, it's so amazing to watch as the eggs hatch and the babies emerge.

Studies seem to point to the idea that chickens do recognize themselves when they look in a mirror. Over the years, I've become known for adding various items to both my baby chicks' brooder, as well as the chicken coop to keep them busy, prevent them from getting bored, and provide enrichment for them. Things like perches, swings, hanging treat baskets, and even a xylophone (that was a failure - my chickens showed no musical ability nor interest at all!). Another item I like to add is a mirror.

But if you're somewhat handy, you can save a lot of money by converting a playhouse, garden shed or even a barn stall into a chicken coop.

As more and more chickens are being kept as family pets instead of food, caring for them in their twilight years has become an important consideration. My grandparents raised chickens. They were legit chicken farmers, raising their flock for both eggs and meat that they used in their restaurant, fed their family, and also sold in the community.
