Nightclubbed to Death

For the better part of ten years, starting in college and going into my late twenties, I went to nightclubs a lot. Nightclubs were fun. I loved the scene, I loved the looks, I loved the music, and I loved to get down. It was about the three Ds: dressing, drinking, and dancing. As the sun started to set on my third decade, I figured it was time to step off the dance floor, toss the coke straw, and let the kids enjoy their time. Plus, I just wasn’t into it anymore.

I’m not a huge traveler. And I’ve never been someone who’s desperate to get out of town. As a New Yorker who loves his city, once lost his city, then ultimately got it back, I see New York through particularly grateful lenses these days. That said, when the guy who hires me to do some work for him offers to send me and the rest of his team to St. Barth’s for a few days, the answer is an unequivocal yes.

I’m so sick of Donald Trump. Totally burnt out. Fried. The sight of him… the sound of his voice… the mere mention of his name… it all makes me wretch a little bit. I’ve never understood his appeal, and I’m grateful I’ll likely never be close enough to smell him. And, yet, he will be the president again for the next four years. Since part of being a responsible citizen is to stay informed, avoiding the incoming president’s image, voice, and name will be impossible.

During the pandemic, there was much talk about how Covid accelerated trends that were already happening. Home delivery for groceries and prepared foods expanded. Online retail for clothing, accessories, and furniture spiked. And as really good televisions became more affordable to accommodate more streaming, enabling more and more people to upgrade their home theaters, movie theater attendance started to collapse even faster.

Sartorially speaking, fall is my favorite season. After a hot summer of bad shorts, unfortunate flip flops, and ill-advised tank tops, and before a cold winter of cumbersome layers, big coats, and hair-killing hats, fall lets us comfortably strut the streets in clothes that flatter. As anyone who knows me knows, I love wearing suits, but they can be unbearably hot in the summer. Certain pairs of jeans, especially with heavier denim, are really wearable only in the cooler weather.

There is a select group of trend-proof garments that have been in style since they were created and will remain in style in perpetuity. I’m thinking about the original Levi’s 501 jeans in raw selvedge denim, the Brooks Brothers button-down shirt in white Oxford cloth, the Ray Ban Aviator, the Rolex Submariner… the list goes on. Classics. Another one is the G9 “Harrington” jacket from Baracuta.

An embarrassing confession: Until last week, I’d never been to the U.K. (I know, I know. Don’t jump on my dick about it.) But I’m proud to type this missive having finally lost my U.K. virginity. After a blow-out birthday weekend in Scotland for Scott Galloway, my friend MaryJean and I hopped over to London, had a great dinner at Rules, and retired to our hotel. I was clearly exhausted, as I didn’t wake up until 1:00 p.m. the next morning.
