GF Jules
Jules Shepard never intended to be a leader or advocate for those living gluten-free, but her journey has made her a prominent figure in the community. After being diagnosed with celiac disease in 1999, Jules, a former domestic violence attorney with a strong sense of justice, refused to settle for the bland and unappetizing gluten-free foods available at that time. After two years of experimentation in her kitchen, she created a versatile gluten-free flour blend that allowed her to continue her love for baking. Jules’ flour has been celebrated as the #1 Certified Gluten Free Flour by consumers! Its remarkable quality has earned it several awards in the Gluten Free Awards. Despite being perfected over a decade ago, many people are still unaware of Jules’ blend because she initially created it solely for herself and her family. However, as word spread and people tasted her delicious creations, they encouraged her to sell her unique five-flour blend. How could she refuse? Since launching in 2008, Jules has sold over a million pounds of her exceptional gluten-free flour—first through her previous company, Jules Gluten Free, and now through her new venture, gfJules®. Her flour and baking mixes consistently win consumer choice awards. You may have come across Jules through her speaking engagements, cooking classes, or her three award-winning books. Perhaps you’ve seen her advocacy work for gluten-free food labeling or heard about her from friends whose lives have changed thanks to her dedication. Jules has built a loyal following because she treats every customer like family. Her goal is to ensure that living gluten-free is safe, enjoyable, and delicious, striving to reunite families around the dinner table with meals everyone can share. Check out videos and articles featuring Jules in the media here. (Note: If you’ve heard of Jules through her former company, you might be confused; she separated from her previous partners in March 2014, and that website no longer represents her work. But you can be assured—YOU'VE FOUND THE REAL JULES!) Jules Shepard speaks nationwide about gluten-free living and baking. Get to know Jules Shepard—she wears many hats. The Washingtonian describes her as “one of the top experts on gluten-free living in the Washington area,” while major media outlets like Time and ABC seek her expertise. As the gluten-free community has expanded, so has the demand for reliable information and advocacy. In addition to managing her flour company and writing three acclaimed books, Jules travels extensively, speaking and

Everybody loves St. Patrick’s Day, but one of the main reasons I love it is because of the food! Give me any excuse to bake a loaf of Gluten Free Irish Soda Bread and I’m a happy girl! There are many other Irish or Irish-ish recipes to help celebrate all things Irish, though.

Traveling to the Netherlands for vacation, study abroad or work should be an exciting experience, not one riddled with worry because you’re gluten free. Fortunately, the Netherlands — and Amsterdam more specifically — is a near-worry-free destination for gluten free travelers. I didn’t go hungry and I didn’t get sick. And I didn’t have to work too hard to find safe food, either. That’s a win in this celiac’s book.

Traveling to Europe can seem daunting with food allergies or celiac disease, but choose the visiting country wisely, and it can be even easier to find the foods you need while on vacation than eating out at home in the States. Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of those places. Being gluten free in Copenhagen isn’t very difficult at all, as you’ll see from this post. And with a little advance planning, it’s even simpler.

As consumers, we rely on food labels to make informed choices about what we eat, especially if we or our loved ones have food allergies. One crucial aspect of these labels has become Precautionary Allergen Statements (PALs), which are meant to warn us about potential allergen cross-contact during food manufacturing. However, inconsistent application of these statements has led to inherent unreliability for consumers. What is a Precautionary Allergen Statement?

Bans on single use plastics and on plastic drinking straws have been good for the environment but they have also raised questions in the gluten free community about the gluten-free status of the substitutes being used. Speculation around whether wheat straws, wheat bran-based plates and other food contact materials might allow gluten to transfer into food, causing gluten cross-contamination with otherwise gluten-free foods, is a growing concern. New studies show that these fears are well-founded.
