Ios might have a legendary reputation for all-night partying, but I discovered the Greek island’s quiet charm over one day in July. Renting a car allowed me to wander beyond the clubs and crowds. My day unfolded slowly. I beach-hopped along golden coves where turquoise waters sparkled beneath clear skies. I strolled Chora’s whitewashed alleyways by late afternoon, captivated by bougainvillea-draped doorways and hidden cafes.

Sailing through the caldera of Santorini at golden hour is the kind of Greek Island experience that feels dreamlike even as it's happening. On my first full day in Santorini, I joined a sunset cruise that began with a hike up Tholos Naftilos volcano, followed by a swim in the mineral-rich waters of Palea Kameni's hot springs. As the sun descended, we drifted toward Amoudi Bay, where Oia and the cliffs glowed in fiery hues, and the sun dropped into the Aegean Sea.

Santorini had lived in my imagination long before I landed on this volcanic island in Greece, and my first glimpse of its whitewashed buildings spilling over the cliffs felt surreal. Santorini was my second stop while island-hopping in Greece.

Rhodes was my first stop on an island-hopping adventure through Greece, setting the stage for what I could expect. Over five days, I wandered through medieval streets, lounged on golden beaches, and found plenty of ways to stretch my budget. From cheap eats in the Old Town to renting a car with hostelmates, Rhodes proved you don't need to splurge to experience its history, charm, and beautiful coastline.

It's 10 pm, I'm at 4,850 meters at base camp, facing a Chimborazo climb, and I can't sleep. High altitudes tend to do that. I lay there, feeling the panic that little oxygen brings, and am writing a death note to my family. Is it a little dramatic? Probably. But I'm also about to go up to 6,263m, and I'm anxiously reading blogs about the experience, which sounds terrifying. I'm not sure why I'm doing it. At 11 pm, we suit up.
