If there’s a way to miss a putt, I’ve mastered it. Low. High. To the side. Throw in a few scream-inducing rollaways for good measure, too. Been there. Done that. And still doing it, might I add. Naturally, when other factors are introduced into the equation, the chances of an embarrassing miss only skyrocket: wind, moisture, craptastic baskets, etc. You might think “obstacles” are worthy of being added to the list, as well. And yes, on occasion, you’d be right about that …But not always.

Putting routines. If you’ve got one, keep it. And if you don’t have one, find one. And then keep it. Nate Sexton flips his disc a half-dozen times. James Conrad whips his glorious ponytail back over his shoulder. Kevin Jones drops his booty lower than you’d think is humanly possible. Imitate what you see others do until you discover what works best to calm your nerves. Or, better yet, come up with your own process. As long as it’s short and repeatable, it’ll get the job done.

I live in Utah. Home of “The Greatest Snow On Earth.”Once upon a time, our license plates claimed as much. Still, come every October, I’m reminded of how much I hate disc golfing in cold weather. In and of itself, it’s not that I don’t like cold weather – I love it when the seasons change. I welcome warmth, but after months of nearly drowning in my own sweat, I’m ready for The Big Man upstairs to crank up the air conditioning a bit. As you can imagine, the inverse is also true.

Goldilocks. Remember the story? “This porridge is too hot.”“This porridge is too cold.”“This porridge is just right.”That should ring a few bells. Goldilocks runs through the same routine with the size of chairs and the firmness of mattresses, while rummaging through a bear family’s home. Similarly, as a disc golfer, there are aspects of your putt that require fine-tuning. Or in other words, finding what feels, you know …“Just right.”Pace is a BIG one of ‘em.

In disc golf, there are two main ways to putt:From a straddled stance. From a staggered stance. Getting beyond footwork, many disc golfers favor a specific angle of release on the putting green, as well. Flat is common, as it allows the disc to “do its thing” without manipulation. And though far from the norm, there are a few psychos who almost exclusively putt with an anhyzer release. Way back when, Paul Ulibarri was known for busting this out. He still does on occasion.
