Calgary – Fluoride will be reintroduced into the city’s drinking water by the end of June, the municipality has announced. A plebiscite conducted during the 2021 municipal election indicated 62 per cent of voters favoured the return of fluoride. The reintroduction, which was originally slated for 2023, has three times been delayed due to upgrades at both of Calgary’s water treatment plants.

Hamilton – The city’s drinking water remains safe to drink despite on ongoing strike by members of the Hamilton Ontario Water Employees Association (HOWEA), residents have been assured. The strike among 55 water employees has reached two weeks with no apparent end in sight. Images of murky tap water have since emerged from Stoney Creek, but the city notes there is no risk.

Moose Jaw – The 2024 annual report of the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant noted the maximum acceptable concentration of fluoride was briefly exceeded in December. It occurred when one of the city’s pumps had shut down on two occasions that were related to plant renewal control system upgrades. The plant’s CEO said the fluoride levels would have been diluted through the 20-kilometre transmission line connecting the plant to the city.

London, Ont. – The city’s international airport has been identified as one of Canada’s hot spots for “forever” chemical contamination. Once used for firefighting training, where foam containing PFAS was used, the site now has 28 monitoring wells. PFAS is a threat to human health and can get into groundwater. Many properties in the airport’s vicinity rely on wells.

Yellowknife, N.W.T. – Two city schools have drinking water with lead levels that exceed maximum acceptable concentrations, the local school board has reported. Although the water is deemed safe for hand washing and cleaning, it is not suitable for drinking or for cooking. Bottled water and water fill stations are being provided in the meantime. The board is working to identify sources of exposure.
