An internationally recognised multi-sport event due to return to Masham for a second year in August has been cancelled. The Long Course Weekend was scheduled to be held in and around the North Yorkshire town from August 29 and 31. It was claimed the event would bring in as much as £2m to the economy and would attract thousands of competitors and visitors. But organisers announced this week that this year’s event would not take place and another venue would be sought for next year.

North Yorkshire Police has adopted the Forcer Protocol to help find Armed Forces veterans, reservists or serving personnel who are reported missing or lost. The announcement has been made ahead of this year’s Armed Forces Day which takes place tomorrow. The Forcer Protocol is a tool to ensure key information is available to police to inform its searches. It works similar to the Herbert Protocol that has been supporting our searches for missing people with dementia since 2015.

A large block of North Yorkshire farmland has gone on the market with a guide price of £2,825,000. The land at Wellfield House Farm is situated between Northallerton and Thirsk. Extending to approximately 259.21 acres (104.91 hectares) in total, the land comprises 229.04 acres of Grade II arable land and 30.17 acres of pastureland running down to the River Wiske, which is classified as Grade III.

A council’s plans to charge for using its public toilets has been described as “scandalous” by a local councillor who has launched a ‘free to pee’ campaign to fight the move. Malton Town Council is planning to introduce a 40p charge to use toilets in the town’s Market Place when it takes over management of the conveniences from North Yorkshire Council.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) has got approval to build a new northern base. The facility will be opened on the outskirts of Skipton-on-Swale, near Thirsk, around three-and-a-half miles from the charity’s current base at RAF Topcliffe. YAA has agreed to buy the land for the base and planning permission has now been approved by North Yorkshire Council. The charity has been a tenant at the RAF base for more than a decade.
