Older people who devote long hours to looking after a frail partner or relative are paying a steep price in lost sleep, stress and declining health, according to new research from the Karolinska Institutet’s Ageing Research Center (ARC). The nationwide survey of 31,000 people aged 65 and above identified 2,157 informal carers; nearly one in five of them clocked more than 30 hours of care a week. Tasks ranged from bathing and feeding to managing finances and providing company.

A University of Adelaide research team has secured almost $1 million to build a digital early-warning system designed to stop dangerous medication mishaps in regional areas. The project, dubbed BRIDGE (Building Rural medication safety through Interdisciplinary, Data-driven, clinical Governance focused on Equity), will be led by Professor Lucie Walters, Director of the University’s Rural Clinical School.

Community gardens, intergenerational playgroups and cultural-heritage workshops are among 51 projects to share $750,000 in state funding aimed at helping older South Australians stay active, connected and confident. The Office for Ageing Well has awarded the money through its 2024-25 Ageing Well Community and Research Grants, which span four streams: Age-Friendly SA, Positive Ageing Fellowships, Impact Research for Ageing Well and Grants for Seniors.

Aged care leaders have welcomed Anthony Albanese’s election victory but say the re-elected Labor government must extend implementation deadlines or risk chaos for older Australians and the providers who serve them.
