In 1798, during the administration of President John Adams, Congress passed the Alien Enemies Act, which gives the president a power to identify, detain, and deport citizens of hostile nations during wartime. The Trump administration has invoked the act in arresting, detaining, and deporting and attempting to deport a wide variety of people. At its inception, the act was a wartime measure; since then, it’s been used only in times of wars declared by Congress.

When I was an ad copywriter, with a speciality in digital-interactive user experience, I worked on a project where I sat side-by-side at a desktop computer with a gifted data guy and we worked up visual representations of our client’s data—sets of graphs and charts, basically—to tell the story our client wanted to tell, which was about, if I remember correctly, some sort of financial crisis supposedly looming for pharmaceutical benefits managers in state governments.

With reference to my last public post, Trump: Impeach Uncooperative Judges, there’s a way of interpreting the Jeffersonians’ bringing baseless charges against Justice Chase, and the acquittal itself, as a strategic victory for Jefferson. The impeachment, in this view, intimidated Chase into toning down his fulminating style and moderating his anti-administration stance. Maybe that’s true about the fulmination.

President Trump and his yes-persons recently touted this notion: federal judges who rule against the president’s orders, for being unconstitutional, or who demand that the administration comply with the law, are committing high crimes and misdemeanors and must be removed from the bench via the Constitution’s impeachment process. As many observers have rightly noted, that’s more or less the definition of a constitutional crisis. There’s nothing novel about Trump’s notion.

I’ve had some compelling responses to the first peek at “The Revenge of Queen Margaret,” my Shakespeare adaptation, and I’ve learned some new things, so I thought I’d post a few notes on process and background, for those interested.
