As queasy as I am about the economy’s tariff shocks, I’m probably feeling better than NBA commissioner Adam Silver is this morning. I’d say I’m definitely feeling better than embattled Dallas Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont this morning, even if his net worth dwarfs mine. Why? Well, obviously the Luka Dončić trade and its perpetually growing infamy, but also this recent point of pride for Dumont and the NBA.

I don’t tend to address feedback, but I’ve been getting one sort of feedback in particular lately and I think it’s worth discussing. First, the backdrop, in my own head and outside of it. I’m a little distracted by recent global turbulence and perhaps you are too. Or maybe you aren’t. I ran into one of my neighbors on Wednesday evening, who commented that I looked a bit tired after lugging my toddler and some bags with less than Tanzanian dexterity.

I’m enjoying this NBA season quite a bit, mostly related to the narrative appeal of the Warriors’ “One Last Ride,” and a few other storylines out West. I don’t have some burning need to shake up the league at this exact moment, and yet, I retain the understanding that the sport is still bedeviled by a range of issues. “What’s wrong with the NBA?” is a well worn topic in which everyone’s pet theory is mostly correct.

I’m interested in the LeBron and Kobe dynamic. I feel defensive even saying so after I watch Stephen A. Smith walk back his comment about LeBron’s presence (or lack thereof?) at Kobe’s memorial. People discuss the LeBron/Kobe topic behind the NBA scenes. They speak about the cold relationship between NBA gods, but there’s trepidation over making text out of that subtext. There are sensitivities here, especially when the subject overlaps with Kobe’s untimely death. Why look into it?

Rising women’s basketball superstar JuJu Watkins suffered an ACL tear on Monday night in USC’s tournament win over Mississippi State. This is unfortunate not just for Watkins but for the sport in general. In addition to just being depressing on its face, the injury is big derailment for a longstanding effort to market Watkins as next in line to be a face of the game.

Okay, this is the more complicated DEI topic in today’s two-parter. It’s funny how a 90/10 proposition like “Jackie Robinson should not be purged from the DOD website” overlaps with other issues of legitimate controversy. It’s complicated in part because Diversity Equity and Inclusion has an expansive definition. “DEI” can mean what we used to call affirmative action, but “DEI” can also mean the ideology used to justify a necessity for affirmative action.
