HSU Lumberjack
The Lumberjack is a weekly newspaper created by students at Humboldt State University, dating back to 1929. Each week, 5,000 copies are printed and distributed across the HSU campus as well as in Arcata, Eureka, and McKinleyville. For those who prefer online access, additional content such as stories, videos, and podcasts can be found at thelumberjack.org. The newspaper focuses on topics that matter to both students and faculty at Humboldt State, while also addressing important news for the Humboldt County community. Coverage includes university matters, protests, rallies, sports, local music events, and even interesting tidbits from the police log.

By Savana RobinsonCal Poly Humboldt’s response to the pro-Palestine protest that occupied Siemens Hall from April 22 – 30, 2024, and ended in 32 arrests, was met with disapproval from the campus community. Just before the following semester, the university updated its Time, Place and Manner policy, which imposed restrictions on amplified sound and public access to campus. This was met with disappointment from activists and students alike.

By Savana RobinsonCal Poly Humboldt Associated Students (AS) President Eduardo Cruz took office on Dec. 13, 2024, after the previous president, Wysdem Singleton, stepped down on Nov. 15, 2024. Before Cruz became AS President, he was the Board of Directors’ Legislative Vice President. Cruz strongly believes in protecting the rights of students who are undocumented and/or part of the LGBTQ+ community.

By Savana RobinsonOn the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 7, Abby Miles opened the door to her family home in Altadena and saw the hillside on fire, flames quickly moving toward her. Miles screamed for her dad, then ran to help neighbors before grabbing some belongings and bags she had already packed for her return to Humboldt. By the time her family had their dogs and most cherished belongings in the car, the sky was bright red and ash was falling.

By Mario OrozcoThe end of Mar’s Gaming Garage is here, and I can’t think of a better way to put the series to rest than with one of my favorite games. For the finale of Mar’s Gaming Garage, I chose to review Persona 5, a Japanese role-playing game. Persona 5 is one of the most well-rounded games I have ever played and strongly holds the number two spot on my gaming Mount Rushmore. The story of Persona 5 is both fun and thought-provoking.
